Esmée Fairbairn Foundation is one of the largest independent grant-makers in the UK, backing core and project costs (and often fully unrestricted funding) for organisations whose work fits one of its three aims, which means a website can be folded into a grant rather than pitched on its own.

  • What they fund: The minimum grant is £30,000 with no maximum, the majority running three to five years, covering core or project costs including staff salaries and overheads, with unrestricted funding also offered to charities. In 2024 the median grant was £150,000 over three years, and 66% of 2024 grants were unrestricted or for core costs, so a website sits easily inside a wider ask. Work must fit one of three aims: the natural world; a fairer, anti-racist future; and creative, confident communities.
  • Who can apply: Registered charities and social enterprises or CICs across the UK whose work aligns with an aim. Collaborations and partnerships are welcomed, and not all partners have to be registered charities, though the lead organisation must meet the eligibility criteria.
  • The angle: This is a strategic relationship, not a quick website grant. In 2025, 5% of expressions of interest went on to be awarded, so it only makes sense where the website is part of a larger, well-aligned piece of work. Complete the eligibility quiz before applying, then submit a short expression of interest. Existing grantees can also apply for Funding Plus, up to £9,000 to commission extra support.
